Knee trouble ? Now Go in for Partial Knee Surgery !
India - Mar 02,2012
Premnath Tiwari, 65, who in his late fifties could swim and run with the vigour of a youngster was since the last four years confined to sitting or at the most slow walking.
" Since the last 4 years I had shooting pain in my right knee which led me to halt all my athletic activities.
Even as my condition worsened I was reluctant to undergo a total knee replacement as it would have debilitated my condition for life," expressed Tiwari.
Tiwari was suffering from Osteoarthritis, a degenerative bone condition that affects 1.5 per cent of the total population in Mumbai.
Tiwari chose to face agony as an alternative to the highly invasive total knee replacement surgery before seeking respite in an innovative technology that has hit Asias shores for the first time.
Two weeks back, Tiwari underwent a partial knee resurfacing procedure and started walking only four hours after going under the scalpel. " More than one lakh citizens beyond 50 years of age in the city suffer from the disease.
Non- intervention can lead to a lifetime of deformities," explained Dr Sankalp Mutha, Orthopaedic Surgeon at Nanavati Hospital, Vile Parle.
In what will ease the patients pockets, partial knee surfacing which can be carried out in case of early diagnosis of Stage II - Osteoarthritis will cost up to Rs 1 lakh as compared to Rs 2.5 lakh that a patient has to shell out for total knee replacement surgery.
Citing advantages of the newly introduced technology, Dr Mutha added, " Moreover, along with fifty percent cost reduction in procedure, healing time is reduced by a fortnight.
There is minimal blood loss as instead of ripping the knee apart, only a small 4 cms incision is conducted for surgery.
The patient can go home the same day after undergoing the surgery." Sources suggest that the doctors who have introduced the technology in the city are also in talks with the state- run JJ Hospital to provide their services at highly reduced costs. A senior state health official stated, " This could be possible if the state health department can get the technologically innovative procedure under Jeevandayi Yojana scheme to provide respite to millions of Osteoarthritis inflicted senior citizens who come to the Mumbai for seeking surgery."
